How to choose the right skating shoes for your kids
If your child is starting their skateboarding journey, choosing the right skate shoes is just as important as picking the perfect skateboard. Unlike regular sneakers, skate shoes are built to handle the wear and tear of skating while providing grip, durability, and support.
The right pair can improve performance, prevent injuries, and last much longer—making them a worthwhile investment. Here’s everything you need to know when shopping for your child’s first (or next) pair of skate shoes.
Why Do Skate Shoes Matter?
Not all shoes are made for skateboarding. Regular sneakers might be fine for casual wear, but they don’t hold up well against the constant movement, impact, and friction that comes with skating. A good pair of skate shoes will:
- Provide better grip on the skateboard for better control and stability.
- Protect feet from impact, especially when landing tricks.
- Last longer, thanks to reinforced materials designed for skateboarding.
- Offer extra comfort and support for all-day skating sessions.

What to Look for in Skate Shoes for Kids
- Pick the Right Sole Type: Vulcanised vs. Cupsole
Skate shoes come with two main types of soles, each offering different benefits:
- Vulcanised Soles – Thinner and more flexible, these soles give skaters better board feel, making them ideal for street skating and learning tricks.
- Cupsoles – Thicker soles with extra cushioning, designed for impact protection. These are better for ramps, high jumps, and aggressive skating styles.
For beginners, vulcanised shoes like Vans Old Skool or Lakai Griffin are great choices since they provide excellent board control while still offering some durability.
Choose a Durable Upper Material
Skateboarding puts a lot of stress on shoes, especially in the toe area. The best materials for skate shoes include:
- Suede – The most durable option, offering excellent protection and longevity.
- Canvas – Lightweight and breathable but tends to wear out faster.
- Leather – Tough and protective, though not as flexible as suede.
Avoid shoes with too much mesh, as they can tear quickly from repeated contact with grip tape. Trusted brands like Vans, Lakai, Emerica, and Nike SB offer high-quality suede skate shoes for kids that can withstand heavy use.
Look for Extra Protection & Support
Skateboarding involves plenty of movement and impact, so extra padding and support are crucial. Features to look for include:
- Padded Tongue & Collar – Protects feet and ankles from board impact.
- Reinforced Toe Cap – Helps prevent holes from repeated tricks like kickflips.
- Heel Support – Reduces the risk of heel bruising and keeps the foot secure.
If your child is an active skater, consider shoes like Vans Sk8-Hi, Lakai Cambridge, or Etnies Marana, which offer excellent protection without sacrificing comfort.
Make Sure the Shoe Has a Good Grip
A skate shoe’s grip is just as important as its durability. The best skate shoes have:
- Gum Rubber Soles – Offers great traction and lasts longer than standard rubber soles.
- Waffle or Herringbone Tread – Special patterns designed to grip the skateboard more effectively.
Brands like Vans (waffle soles) and Lakai (Para-Mount outsole) are known for their superior grip, ensuring your child can confidently stay on their board.
Choose the Right Fit
A well-fitting skate shoe improves control and comfort. When trying on a pair, check for:
- A little wiggle room for the toes—too tight, and it’ll be uncomfortable; too loose, and it could cause slipping.
- A snug fit around the heel to prevent blisters and foot movement inside the shoe.
- Just the right balance between snug and flexible for better board control.
Since kids’ feet grow quickly, you might want to go half a size up to extend the shoe’s lifespan. Brands like Nike SB tend to run slightly bigger, making them a good option if you want some extra room for growth.
Best Skate Shoe Brands for Kids
If you’re not sure where to start, these brands are well-known for their durability, comfort, and kid-friendly designs:
- Vans – A classic, durable choice with excellent grip (Old Skool, Sk8-Hi, Slip-On).
- Lakai – These are skate shoes designed by skaters, for skaters (Griffin, Cambridge).
- Emerica – Great for high-impact skating, known for durability (Reynolds G6, Wino G6).
- Etnies – Comfortable and cushioned for extra foot support (Marana, Joslin 2).
- Nike SB – Stylish and functional, great for both skating and everyday wear (Stefan Janoski, Nyjah Free).

![[AD] The sun has finally made an appearance and the boys have been making the most of it by spending it
in the garden.
They’re go-to is always football and they’ve been trying to improve their aim and accuracy with the new Messi Foldable Footlball goal from the #MessiTrainingSystem range.
I love the fact the goal is foldable, making it easy to store away when not in use. It is also lightweight so you can effortlessly pack it up and take it to the park or to a friend’s house.
The Messi Foldable Football Goal retails at £36 and can be purchased from @argos
