Keswick

In the heart of the north lakes, Keswick is a vibrant market town on the shores of Derwentwater and under the watchful gaze of Skiddaw. There are plenty of hiking trails in the area for those who enjoy nature. For experienced walkers, Latrigg and Catbells are a popular draw. It’s also home to one of the main Outdoor Activities centres in the UK, with plenty to keep adventurous visitors occupied. Opt for a spot of Ghyll Scrambling, water sports or hit the heights with the area’s two indoor climbing walls.

When it comes to cultural experiences in the area, The Theatre by the Lake offers a diverse programme throughout the year with a scenic backdrop.

Keswick’s market square hosts a regular market with plenty of local produce to tempt visitors. Plus, there are also plenty of local craft stalls for souvenirs.

There are also a couple of events that take place in Keswick during the summer months that you may want to consider:

• 16th – 18th May – The Keswick Mountain Festival takes place with live music, outdoor activities, and sports competitions amongst the events to get involved in.
• 6th – 7th June – Keswick Beer Festival, a weekend event that will bring together cider and beer lovers. There will be live music, with the event showcasing both local and global breweries.

Glenridding

A small village at the southern end of Ullswater, Glenridding is quite a tranquil place to visit. If you are looking for somewhere peaceful then this is the destination for you. The area is popular with those who want a mainly walking based holiday with Aira Force, and for those with significant walking  and/or mountaineering experience, Striding Edge and Helvellyn are popular attractions. Remember to prepare thoroughly if you’re attempting either of these walks. A cruise on Lake Ullswater offers several opportunities to get off the boat and explore, catching a later boat back to your starting point.

Borrowdale

Just a few miles south of Keswick lies Borrowdale and its stunning valley, which is famous for its natural features and incredible views. It is a popular destination for walkers, climbers and those who love outdoor activities. It is a great place to visit if you are wanting to indulge in an interest in photography or painting, with Ashness Bridge a popular attraction for artists and photographers. There is even a carpark just a few minutes’ walk away.

Nearby Dock Tarn and Great Cragg are popular with those who enjoy fly-fishing, and there are also boat rental opportunities. The Bowder Stone is popular with rock climbers. Plus, for those who love waterfalls, a trip to Lodore Falls is a must.
