Lockdown DIY Diary

For most of us, lockdown’s feeling like Groundhog Day without any of the funny bits.

Health comes first, of course, and making sacrifices to keep ourselves and others safe is the least we can do.

However, since you’re stuck at home for the foreseeable, how about levelling up your DIY game?

We’re not talking building your own orangery or knocking internal walls down with a sledgehammer (please don’t).

But there are some relatively simple DIY tasks you can tackle over the next few weeks and months which, with a bit of luck, might see you through to summer and a world that feels much freer.

Sounds good?

Take a look at this lockdown DIY diary and try one of these tasks a month.

Clean your carpets

Do you usually treat yourself to a session from a pro carpet cleaner?

Us too, but lockdown has put an end to that, and besides, it’s perfectly possible to do it for yourself and save money.

So if/when DIY stores are open in your area, you should definitely order a carpet cleaning machine for a day and use it with a good shampoo with a stain protector – for instance, you can rent a Rug Doctor carpet cleaner from Homebase for 24 hours very cheaply.

Wash your windows

Having trouble finding a good window cleaner during lockdown?

Pro window cleaning is a skill that you probably won’t pick up in a few months, but with a few simple items, you can make a pretty good job of it – that said, please leave the high external windows to the pros, for safety’s sake!

Add a teaspoon of dishwashing liquid to two gallons of water and a good sponge will get rid of the most stubborn stains and streaks. Some people use vinegar as an alternative to washing up liquid, and if the windows are larger or you want a more polished finish, invest in a squeegee from the likes of Oypla.

Hang a door

We’ve left the most ambitious lockdown DIY project ‘til last. You’ll need a willing assistant to hang a door (not a small child), but it’s certainly doable, will give you an enormous sense of satisfaction and really switch up your interior ambience.

First off, measure your portal properly and order an outstanding replacement from the likes of Oakwood Doors.

Then test the fit of the door by tapping in a few nails to stop if falling through the frame and leave a decent gap at the bottom and a gap the width of a 1p piece at the sides and top.

Chances are you’ll have to shave a little off the door, so it fits perfectly – use a hand plane for this, go easy and remember to shave equal amounts from the top and bottom of the door because then any designs will still look symmetrical.

Next, you’ll need to measure, mark, and chisel out your hinges, then screw them into the door and then to the frame. Again, screw-in lightly at first to check the door opens smoothly.

Try these three DIY tips and add a new dimension to your lockdown – you can thank us later!
