Gaming Bed Review: How the Recoil Summit Made Our Box Room Work

E and M have shared a bedroom since they were small, and while it was fine for a while, we’ve definitely hit the point where it just doesn’t work anymore. Two growing boys, double the clothes, gadgets, and general mess… You can imagine how cramped it got.

That left us staring at the little box room. For years, it’s been the “spare space” — half guest room, half dumping ground for anything we didn’t know what to do with. But with the boys needing their own space, we finally decided it was time to clear it out and make it into M’s room.

The only problem? It’s tiny. We knew we’d have to be clever with furniture if we wanted it to work. That’s when we came across the Recoil Summit Gaming High Sleeper with Wardrobe. Or, as it’s known around here, the gaming bed. It’s a bed, a desk, and a wardrobe all rolled into one — and honestly, it felt like the only way we were going to squeeze everything into such a small space.

The Gaming Bed Setup

The Recoil Summit isn’t just a bed — it’s basically a whole bedroom in one. You’ve got the high sleeper up top, then underneath there’s a desk that stretches across the length of the frame, a wardrobe built into the side, and some shelves for everything else. For a small room like ours, it really does tick all the boxes: sleep, study, storage.

M was most excited about the desk. It’s the perfect spot for his gaming setup — he’s already claimed it with his monitor, keyboard, and PC tower tucked neatly underneath. The wardrobe gives him somewhere to hang his uniform and hoodies, plus a bit of space at the bottom for trainers. The shelves are filling up fast with the usual mix of knick-knacks, books, and random bits he refuses to part with.

What I like most is how it keeps everything in one place. Instead of trying to cram a separate desk and wardrobe into the room, the “gaming bed” pulls it all together so the rest of the space stays open. It’s a clever design, and for M, it feels like he finally has a proper base that’s just his.

Now, I’m not going to lie — this isn’t the kind of bed you throw together in half an hour. The instructions were clear and everything was labelled properly, which definitely helped, but it still took us a good two to three hours to get it all up and standing. You really do need two people for this one — there are a few moments where you’re trying to line pieces up and someone has to hold the frame steady while the other person bolts things in. Doing it solo would be a nightmare.

That said, once we got into a rhythm, it wasn’t too bad. The design is very sleek and stylish once it’s finished, and M’s face when he first climbed up to try the bed out made it worth every minute. It instantly gave the room a completely different feel — less like a cramped box room and more like a proper bedroom just for him.

Once it was all built and M had moved his stuff in, the bed pretty much transformed the room overnight. For a start, it actually looks cool — the black and red design makes it feel more like a gaming setup than a kid’s bed, which M loves. It definitely suits his age and personality right now.

The desk has become his main hub. Between the monitor, keyboard, and his PC tower underneath, he’s claimed it as his gaming station, though it does mean there’s not a huge amount of room left over for homework. We’re looking at adding an extendable keyboard tray to free up some space when he needs it. Small tweaks like that make all the difference.

Storage-wise, the wardrobe is big enough for his school uniform and a handful of hoodies, with some room at the bottom for shoes. The shelves are already full of knick-knacks, books, and bits he insists on keeping close. He still uses the fitted wardrobes in the old room he shared with E for the bulk of his clothes, but this setup gives him enough to keep his essentials tidy.

There are a couple of quirks. The dark colours mean the desk area can feel a bit gloomy, so we’re planning to stick some LED strips up to brighten things. And if you’re not careful, you can knock your head when you sit down at the desk — it’s just the nature of a high sleeper, really. And personally, I feel it would be beneficial to have a hole at the back of the desk to store cables behind to keep them tidy. I think that would be a great feature to have. Nothing major, but things worth keeping in mind.

Overall, though, M has taken to it straight away. He’s already more protective of his space, and if it encourages him to keep things a little tidier than before, that’s a bonus in my book.

Final Thoughts

Turning the box room into M’s bedroom felt like a big job, but honestly, the Recoil Summit made it so much easier. The gaming bed isn’t the sturdiest piece of furniture we’ve ever built, and there are a couple of things we’ll tweak (like adding lights and a keyboard tray), but for what we needed — sleep, study, and storage all in one — it’s spot on.

Most importantly, M loves it. He finally has a room he can call his own, a space where he can game, do homework (when he has to), and just chill out without clashing with E. That alone has been worth every bit of the effort.

If you’re working with a small room and need something that really makes the most of the space, this “gaming bed” is a clever solution. It looks great, does the job, and has given M that bit of independence he’s been waiting for.
