10 Brilliant Family Day Trips Within 2 Hours of London
When the sun’s out and the weekend’s calling, there’s nothing better than packing up the car (or hopping on a train) for a spontaneous family adventure. We have been on so many adventures around the UK as a family.
From the historic Dolwyddelan to the vibrant Southampton, the serene Devon to the charming Midlands, we’ve explored a wide range of destinations around the UK.
Living in Surrey, just a stone’s throw away from London, we’ve discovered some fantastic day trips within a 2-hour reach, whether you’re travelling by car or train.
Excited? Here are 10 fantastic family day trips within 1–2 hours of London, offering a variety of activities perfect for school holidays, weekend boredom busters, or just getting some fresh air!
1. Brighton Beach, Pier and a Whole Lot of Fun
1 hour by train from London Victoria

Brighton is a classic for a reason. With pebble beaches, a fun-filled pier packed with arcades and rides, and the quirky Lanes to explore, there’s something for everyone. Kids love the seafront playgrounds, and you can always grab fish and chips by the sea, making it one of the most perfect family day trips within 2 hours of London.
Top Tip: Pack swimwear and water shoes if it’s warm – the kids always end up in the water, even if you don’t plan for it!
2. Windsor – Royal Vibes and River Cruises
1 hour by car / 40 mins by train

Windsor Castle is a hit with history fans, but even without going inside, Windsor makes a great day out. Walk along the Thames, take a boat cruise, and let the kids run wild in Alexandra Gardens.
Food tip: There are many family-friendly spots, but grabbing a picnic and sitting by the river on a sunny day is hard to beat.
3. Box Hill – For Adventurous Explorers
1–1.5 hours by car

For a National Trust favourite, Box Hill in Surrey is ideal for a nature-filled day. The Stepping Stones walk is fun for kids (and not too steep!), and the views are stunning.
Pack: Plenty of water, a picnic, and your walking shoes. There’s also a café at the top if you fancy an ice cream reward.
4. Whipsnade Zoo – A Roarsome Day Out
1.5 hours by car

Bigger and much more spacious than London Zoo, ZSL Whipsnade Zoo in Bedfordshire offers elephants, rhinos, lions, and more, along with countryside views.
Tip: It’s hilly, so bring the buggy if you’ve got little legs in tow.
5. Hever Castle – Moats, Mazes and Tudor History
1.5 hours by car

This beautiful castle in Kent was Anne Boleyn’s childhood home, and it’s a firm favourite with families. There’s a water maze (expect to get wet), a huge playground, and gorgeous gardens to wander.
Insider tip: Book tickets online in advance and bring towels if your kids love a splash!
6. Whitstable – Coastal Charm and Crabbing
1.5 hours by car / Train: around 1 hour 15 mins

This picturesque seaside town is perfect for a slower-paced day. There’s a lovely beach, colourful beach huts, and loads of spots for crabbing.
What to bring: Buckets, lines and bait — and maybe a change of clothes if crabbing gets competitive!
7. The Southbank – Culture, Food and Playgrounds
Within 30–45 minutes by train for most Londoners

South Bank is always a winner if you want to stay in the city but still enjoy a full day out. Walk along the Thames, explore the Southbank Centre, spot street performers, and grab bites from food stalls.
Don’t miss: The Jubilee Gardens playground right by the London Eye.
8. RHS Garden Wisley – Colour, Nature and Ice Cream
Drive: 1 hour from SW London

This RHS garden in Surrey is a peaceful place for kids to burn off energy without the crowds. It has a soft-play-style garden, trails to follow, and seasonal activities.
Food: The cafés are great, and picnics are welcome. Try their famous rose-flavoured ice cream in summer!
9. Leeds Castle – The Loveliest Castle in the World
Drive: 1.5–2 hours from London

Set on two islands in a lake, Leeds Castle in Kent is storybook-perfect. There’s a giant maze, falconry displays, and loads of space to run.
Family tip: You can rent a rowboat or take a mini train around the grounds — both are a big hit with little ones.
Bekonscot Model Village – Tiny Town, Big Fun
Drive: 1 hour from London (Image for illustration only and not representative of Bekonscot Model Village).

For something truly different, Bekonscot Model Village in Beaconsfield is a mini version of 1930s Britain. Kids are mesmerised by the little trains, cars, and bustling scenes.
Ideal for: Younger kids or those who love all things miniature.
Tips for a Smooth Day Trip in the Heat
Escaping the city can be refreshing, with British homes not built for heatwaves. A few pointers to make sure your day out goes smoothly:
- Pack cooling essentials: hats, sunscreen, refillable water bottles, cooling spray, hand-held fans.
- Shade matters: Plan picnic stops with shady options or places with indoor cafés to cool down.
- Early bird wins: Arrive early to beat the heat and the crowds, especially at popular spots.
- Freeze snacks & drinks: Frozen juice boxes double as mini cool packs in the bag.
- Plan for splash zones: Some destinations have water play areas, and towels and spare clothes are lifesavers.
Travelling Without a Car?
Many of these destinations are easily reachable by train. Southeastern, Southern, and South Western Railway offer family-friendly tickets, and you can often save with a Family & Friends Railcard (worth it even if you only use it a few times a year).
Family Day Trips Within 2 Hours of London: Final Thoughts
Sometimes the best family memories are the spontaneous ones. A blanket, a packed lunch, and a map can lead to the loveliest adventures — and there’s no shortage of options near London.
If you have a favourite day trip we haven’t covered, we’d love to hear about it! We’re always eager to explore new places, especially if they come with a good playground and a cup of coffee nearby.

![[AD] The sun has finally made an appearance and the boys have been making the most of it by spending it
in the garden.
They’re go-to is always football and they’ve been trying to improve their aim and accuracy with the new Messi Foldable Footlball goal from the #MessiTrainingSystem range.
I love the fact the goal is foldable, making it easy to store away when not in use. It is also lightweight so you can effortlessly pack it up and take it to the park or to a friend’s house.
The Messi Foldable Football Goal retails at £36 and can be purchased from @argos
