Tips for a smooth move abroad with your family
Moving abroad with your family is no small feat. The process can be time-consuming, financially costly, and full of logistical challenges – not to mention emotional ones! You may have questions about where to start, how to keep everyone safe and comfortable during the transition, or how you’ll manage details as complex as childcare and schooling. No matter what hurdles you’re facing on the road ahead, we’re here for you. In this post, we cover valuable tips for a smooth move abroad with your family that will help make sure the process runs smoothly (as much as possible!). Read on for simple ways to stay organised throughout this big journey.

Get help from professionals
When preparing and planning for a move abroad with your family, it’s important to line up the right professionals and resources so you can make the best decisions. Getting professional advice on taxes, visas, and other legal matters—at home and in your destination country—can take a lot of stress off the process. Invest the time early on to understand what documents, permits, and applications are needed at each stage of your move. Doing this can save you valuable time and resources later. It’s often cost-effective in the long run—even if it feels like extra costs upfront—so that you’re set up for success from day one in your new country. You should speak to an immigration attorney and/or a visa specialist about the requirements for your destination country and also to an accountant or financial advisor about any tax concerns. When it comes to housing, enlist the help of a real estate agent who’s knowledgeable about your new location.
Plan ahead
Making the decision to move abroad with your family is an exciting but daunting prospect requiring careful planning and consideration. To ensure a smooth transition, it’s important to think carefully about all the factors that will come into play, such as cost of living, taxes, culture, language, and schooling. Doing adequate research for each factor can make all the difference when the time comes for your move. Think through different scenarios – what are the best areas for employment opportunities? What taxes should you account for? What educational opportunities are available, and how easily could you learn another language? Taking the time to plan ahead and answer these questions will prepare you ahead of time and ensure a successful experience moving abroad with your family.
Start packing early
When it comes to planning the perfect move abroad for your family, it pays to start packing early. By beginning your packing process with plenty of time before the big day, you can avoid any last-minute hassles and stressful moments–ensuring a smooth transition for everyone involved. With an organized bag checklist and a few key reminders, like ensuring all items are clearly labelled, you’ll be more than prepared and raring to go on moving day! What’s more, starting early enables you to slowly adjust to the idea of moving away and slowly say goodbye without the panic that comes with being rushed against the clock.
Sort out the finances
Moving your family abroad can be a daunting task, especially when considering the finances. Therefore, it’s important that you organise your money before packing up and saying goodbye. Prepare a budget and assess your income to make sure you have enough in savings to cover yourself and everyone in your family. In an ideal situation, aim for six months’ worth of salary stashed away just in case any bumps arise during this time of transition. Additionally, research the cost of living in the country you are planning to move to; once you have a good estimate of the expenses there, try to factor that into your budget. Finances may seem like a headache now, but with the right preparation and information, it can be much smoother down the road.
Learn about the new culture
Making a move abroad with your family can often be intimidating – but it doesn’t have to be! Taking the time to learn about the new culture you’re entering is a great first step. That way, you can hit the ground running when you arrive in your new home. Exploring customs and traditions beforehand helps to make for a more seamless transition, as this gives you an idea of how the locals might greet you and interact with each other. Plus, learning about local customs and traditions will show them that you are open to adapting to their way of life, allowing for a smoother integration process. Immersing yourself in the new culture will create a better experience for both you and your family – from making friends to finding work, it all starts with familiarising yourself with the culture of your future home.
Make sure everyone is prepared
Ensuring that all family members are prepared for the transition to living abroad is an important part of a smooth move for the entire family. Planning ahead for jobs, schooling, and any other commitments is essential. Developing a realistic plan in advance surrounding these elements can help prevent any issues from arising during the move and ease stress levels. Consulting with professionals such as immigration lawyers and real-estate agents, if appropriate, can be beneficial when making decisions about job opportunities or housing options. It may even be wise to organise a few meetings with key people prior to leaving so that the transition is as smooth as possible. All these efforts will help ensure everyone is comfortable with the move once abroad.

Moving abroad with your family is no small feat. There are a lot of different things to take into consideration and plan for. However, it can be achieved with foresight and due diligence. Start early and ensure you give yourself enough time to put all the pieces together, from researching the cost of living in your desired destination to setting up financial safety nets and learning about the culture before you get there. Take the advice of professionals when needed; this will ensure that everyone has a thorough understanding of any visas and tax matters occurring throughout the process. Most importantly, always remember that moving abroad is an incredible experience for everyone involved, so never be afraid to embark on this new adventure!

![[AD] The sun has finally made an appearance and the boys have been making the most of it by spending it
in the garden.
They’re go-to is always football and they’ve been trying to improve their aim and accuracy with the new Messi Foldable Footlball goal from the #MessiTrainingSystem range.
I love the fact the goal is foldable, making it easy to store away when not in use. It is also lightweight so you can effortlessly pack it up  and take it to the park or to a friend’s house.
The Messi Foldable Football Goal retails at £36 and can be purchased from @argos
