The ultimate packing list for a winter getaway
Planning a winter trip? Whether you’re heading to a snowy cabin retreat, hitting the slopes, or exploring a charming winter city, packing the right essentials can make all the difference. The key to staying comfortable in cold weather is layering, insulation, and weatherproof gear—so you can enjoy the beauty of winter without shivering through it.
To make your trip stress-free, here’s the ultimate winter packing list to keep you warm, cosy, and ready for any adventure.
Warm Base Layers
A good base layer is essential for staying warm. Look for moisture-wicking thermal tops and leggings made from wool or synthetic fabrics. These materials help regulate body temperature by keeping sweat away from your skin while trapping heat.
- Best choices: Merino wool or thermal polyester blends
- Avoid: Cotton—it absorbs moisture and can make you feel colder

Insulated Jacket
A well-insulated jacket is non-negotiable for a winter getaway. Choose a down or synthetic puffer jacket for maximum warmth without feeling bulky. If you expect wet conditions, make sure your jacket is waterproof to keep you dry in rain or snow.
- Best for dry cold: Down jackets (lightweight but very warm)
- Best for wet cold: Synthetic insulation with waterproof outer shell
Cosy Fleece Pajamas
After a long day out in the cold, nothing beats slipping into warm fleece pajamas. They provide the perfect balance of softness and warmth, making sure you stay comfortable and toasty all night long.
- Why fleece? It’s lightweight, insulating, and soft against the skin
Waterproof Boots
Your feet will thank you for bringing insulated, waterproof boots. Look for boots with good traction to prevent slipping on icy surfaces and enough insulation to keep your feet warm even in freezing temperatures.
- Best choice: Waterproof snow boots with fleece or thermal lining
- Don’t forget: A pair of casual but warm shoes for indoor wear
Gloves & Hand Warmers
Protecting your hands is just as important as keeping the rest of your body warm. A thick, insulated pair of gloves will keep your fingers from freezing. If you need to use your phone outdoors, opt for touchscreen-friendly gloves.
- Bonus tip: Pack disposable hand warmers for extra heat in extreme cold
Thermal Socks
Cold feet can ruin even the most exciting winter adventure. Thermal socks or synthetic blends are perfect for keeping your toes warm, whether you’re trekking through the snow or relaxing by the fireplace.
- Best materials: Wool, thermal polyester blends
- Pro tip: Pack extra pairs—wet socks are the worst in cold weather
Scarf, Hat & Ear Warmers
Heat escapes quickly from your head and neck, so bundle up with a warm scarf, beanie, or ear warmers.
- Best choice: Fleece-lined or wool accessories
- Extra tip: A snood or neck gaiter can offer extra wind protection
Snow Pants or Waterproof Bottoms
If you’re planning to ski, snowboard, or go sledding, a regular pair of jeans won’t cut it. Waterproof snow pants will keep you warm and dry in wet, snowy conditions.
- Alternative: If you’re just exploring a city, thermal leggings or lined jeans are a good substitute
Sweaters & Hoodies
Layering is key, so bring a mix of wool sweaters, fleece hoodies, and pullovers. These are perfect for layering under your jacket or wearing indoors.
- Best materials: Wool, fleece, or thermal blends
- Pro tip: A half-zip fleece is great for easy temperature control
Moisturising Skincare Essentials
Winter air can be harsh and drying, so don’t forget to pack moisturising essentials to keep your skin comfortable.
- Must-haves: Lip balm, hand cream, and a hydrating face moisturiser
- Pro tip: A facial mist can help prevent your skin from drying out in heated indoor spaces
Portable Charger
Cold weather drains phone batteries faster than usual. Keep a portable charger handy so you can stay connected and take plenty of winter photos without worrying about your battery dying.
- Best choice: A lightweight power bank with multiple charges
Hot Beverage Travel Mug
Nothing beats a hot drink on a cold day. A high-quality insulated travel mug keeps your coffee, tea, or hot cocoa warm while you explore.
- Pro tip: Fill it up before heading out for an instant warm-up wherever you go
Packing smart for a winter getaway means staying warm, dry, and comfortable no matter what activities you have planned. Focus on layering high-quality, insulating materials and investing in weatherproof essentials so you can enjoy the beauty of winter without the discomfort of the cold.
With this ultimate packing list, you’ll be ready for whatever winter adventures come your way. Safe travels and stay warm!

![[AD] The sun has finally made an appearance and the boys have been making the most of it by spending it
in the garden.
They’re go-to is always football and they’ve been trying to improve their aim and accuracy with the new Messi Foldable Footlball goal from the #MessiTrainingSystem range.
I love the fact the goal is foldable, making it easy to store away when not in use. It is also lightweight so you can effortlessly pack it up and take it to the park or to a friend’s house.
The Messi Foldable Football Goal retails at £36 and can be purchased from @argos
