Outdoor Fun for Teens: Exploring the Best UK Adventures
I can’t be the only one who struggles to find things for the boys to be interested in now that they’re getting older. The teenage years can be really awkward for the whole family, and navigating through the ups and downs and still making the teens go outside and get some fresh air can be tricky, to say the least. I know my boys have their moments despite M still being in the tween phase. Things are changing, and I’m always looking for ideas for outdoor fun for teens to keep both boys happy and ensure we have time together as a family for as long as possible.
Luckily, the UK offers many activities catering to diverse interests, from digital treasure hunts to exhilarating physical challenges. We know because we’ve been to many different fun outdoor activities for teens, such as days out and activities. With this in mind, I thought I would share a few ideas of ways you can engage your bored teen to get outdoors and hopefully elicit a smile or two from them. It’s always worth a try, right?

Digital Outdoor Adventures
1. Geocaching
Geocaching, often described as a real-world treasure hunt, is a fantastic way for teens to explore new areas, solve puzzles, and experience the thrill of discovery. It involves using GPS devices or smartphones to hide and seek containers (called “geocaches” or “caches”) at specific locations marked by coordinates all over the world, and it’s a modern way to introduce fun outdoor activities for the entire family. It could be your local park or somewhere further afield; the beauty is that you can explore different locations, keeping it fun and fresh all the time.
Personally, I love the idea of geocaching. It’s a great way to get out in both city environments and in nature. Plus, you can always sweeten the deal by buying your teens some appropriate clothing or footwear, from tracksuits to hoodies and comfy trainers. There are plenty of ways you can dress appropriately for the activity or add comfort.
2. StreetHunt Games
For those seeking an interactive city experience, StreetHunt offers mystery-solving adventures in cities like London and York. Participants follow clues, solve riddles, and uncover hidden gems in urban landscapes using smartphones. It’s an excellent blend of technology and outdoor exploration, and it’s pretty much like a modern-day scavenger hunt. I think this definitely sounds like something we would love as a family, not just the boys. Plus, it allows us to indulge in some healthy, friendly competition because that makes everything more fun, doesn’t it?
3. Ring & RSPB Birdwatching Initiative
Ring is giving away free outdoor cameras to UK residents aged 18-35 in partnership with the RSPB. This initiative encourages younger generations to engage in birdwatching and wildlife conservation by enabling remote monitoring of garden birds.
Offline Outdoor Activities
1. Hiking and Trail Adventures
The UK boasts some of Europe’s most scenic trails, perfect for hiking enthusiasts.
- Helvellyn, Lake District: One of the most popular peaks in the Lake District, Helvellyn offers challenging routes with rewarding views. Don’t forget to invest in hiking boots to keep your feet safe and ensure you are fully prepared for the terrain you’ll be navigating.

2. Mountain Biking
Mountain biking offers an exhilarating experience for those seeking an adrenaline rush. It’s a great way for teens to test their skills and enjoy the thrill of the ride.
- Eastridge Mountain Bike Trail Centre, Shropshire: This free venue, developed and maintained by volunteers, features a mix of blue, red, and black graded trails.
- Betteshanger Park, Kent: Known for its 3.5km tarmac road race/time trial cycle circuit, it’s among the best outdoor tarmac road cycle circuits in the UK.

3. Water Sports
Coastal regions and lakes across the UK are perfect for water-based activities.
- Stand-Up Paddleboarding in Pembrokeshire: Ideal for beginners and experienced paddlers alike, offering stunning coastal views.
- Kayaking in Lake Windermere: Navigate the UK’s largest lake surrounded by picturesque landscapes.
4. Adventure Parks
For a mix of thrills and nature, adventure parks are a great choice.

Clubs and Competitions

3. Parkrun

4. PGL Outdoor Education

These centres are designed to build young people’s confidence, teamwork, and leadership skills while ensuring they have fun. Whether it’s building skills solo doing activities or participating in team sports, there are plenty of opportunities for your teens to do fun things indoors and outdoors.
Local Highlights Across the UK
- Lake District: In addition to hiking, the Lake District offers opportunities for kayaking on its serene lakes and exploring picturesque villages.
- Scotland’s Highlands: This area is ideal for teens interested in mountaineering, wildlife spotting, and experiencing Scotland’s rich cultural heritage.

- Cornwall: Offers surfing lessons, coastal walks, and the chance to explore historic mining landscapes.
Tips for Parents and Guardians
- Safety First: Always ensure that teens are equipped with the necessary gear and know safety protocols, especially when engaging in water sports or hiking.
- Participating in group events or joining clubs can help teens build social connections and a sense of community, which can motivate them to stay active and engaged.
- Limit Screen Time: Encourage outdoor activities as a way to reduce screen time and promote physical health.
- Support Their Interests: Whether mountain biking or birdwatching, support your teen’s interests by providing the necessary resources and encouragement.
If outdoor fun for teens is on the cards, whether they need a new hobby to do alone or you want to embrace the great outdoors together as a family, these ideas are just some of the best outdoor activities and suggestions you can consider or even use as inspiration to locate something similar in your local area. ![[AD] The sun has finally made an appearance and the boys have been making the most of it by spending it
in the garden.
They’re go-to is always football and they’ve been trying to improve their aim and accuracy with the new Messi Foldable Footlball goal from the #MessiTrainingSystem range.
I love the fact the goal is foldable, making it easy to store away when not in use. It is also lightweight so you can effortlessly pack it up and take it to the park or to a friend’s house.
The Messi Foldable Football Goal retails at £36 and can be purchased from @argos
