Medihoney – a natural relief for eczema
When M was around 8 weeks old, we found that he had a cow’s milk intolerance, and it coincided with the exact time I stopped expressing breast milk. I won’t go into too much detail, but suffice it to say, I struggled with breastfeeding both boys, so as an alternative, I expressed until it simply got too much before moving on to formula. It was the cow’s milk protein in the formula that gave M reflux and a horrible rash on his face, triggering allergic reactions. This was our first experience of baby eczema, leading us to look into natural relief for eczema for babies.
What is Eczema?
Eczema is a chronic skin condition. The symptoms of eczema are usually characterised by dry, itchy, red, sensitive skin that can become cracked and inflamed. You will like to see the appearance of red scaly patches on sufferers, and it often comes with eczema flare-ups along with periods where it’s more manageable.
Eczema isn’t contagious, and while it doesn’t look nice, it presents no risk to anyone except pain and discomfort to the person with eczema. Typically, those with eczema will look for natural relief for eczema symptoms as well as use medication prescribed by a doctor. This is because eczema can be caused or triggered by numerous factors, including the immune system, genetics, environmental triggers, and allergies. The exact cause of eczema will vary from person to person. But we have already experienced this as a family.
My husband has also been a long-term sufferer of eczema and, as you can imagine, has tried many different types of creams, changes in diet and, steroids, etc. Luckily for us, though, M’s skin cleared up with the use of aqueous cream as well as also using prescription formula (the milk protein in this is broken down a lot more than regular formula) So that was that, or so we thought.
M caught chickenpox from his older brother quite badly back in the summer – even now, he still has scars on his chest and tummy. Since then, though, he has been suffering from eczema in the crevice of his left arm, which we haven’t been able to shift. We have tried many creams, including Epaderm and Sudocrem. Surprisingly we found Epaderm didn’t seem to make much of a difference. Sudocrem did, but every time it looked like it was on the verge of healing, M would seemingly have a scratching episode, and we would be back to square one again.
I was about to take M to the doctor to ask for a mild steroid cream to clear his patch of eczema when we were offered the opportunity to try Medihoney, a derma cream by Comvita. After doing some research on it, I was intrigued and thought it was worth trying.
What is Medihoney?
Medihoney is a rich emollient with medical-grade manuka honey, aloe vera and chamomile. While it doesn’t claim to be a treatment for eczema, many sufferers have found it to help relieve the dry, itchy skin with its natural ingredients, and there have been many success stories.
Testing Medihoney
We were very eager to try this out when it arrived. You will see from the first picture that M’s arm was quite red and dry before we started using Medihoney. We applied a tiny blob over the affected area and rubbed it in. I found it to be more gel-like than a cream, but it rubbed in quite easily. M’s first reaction was, “It smells!” and he was right. It does – but not in a horrible way. To me, it just smelt like honey – but it certainly wasn’t overly sticky to apply to the skin. We applied this twice a day – once in the morning and once at night.
You will see from the photos below that we saw a dramatic difference in just three days. The skin was no longer as red or as dry as it was previously and M was not itching the area at all.
However, we did forget to apply the cream for a couple of days (see photo below), and in those couple of days, M did itch the area, so it became red again.
The results
We have been using the cream for just under two weeks now, and I have to say there has been a vast improvement. The redness and dryness have pretty much gone, and we only need to apply the cream once a day.
Verdict
Medihoney has most definitely cleared up eczema from M’s arm much better than any of the other creams we have previously tried. You can still tell that the eczema is there as it still feels a bit bumpy to touch, but if you can get results like this in just two weeks, I would say if you are an eczema sufferer, it’s definitely worth a try.
The interesting thing for us now is seeing if the eczema will disappear completely – watch this space!

We’ve been really lucky – touch wood – and avoided eczema so far. It’s always good to read about creams that actually work though for future reference! #KCACOLS
It’s a great cream I would definitely recommend it and you only need to use a little so the tube goes a long way
The Medihoney cream seems to be working a treat which must be a great relief for both of you. Holly seems to have gotten eczema on her thighs, down the back of her legs and on her arms at the moment so I’ll definitely keep Medihoney in mind for her.xx #KCACOLS
Oh poor Holly! Eczema on children is really not nice – its hard for them not to scratch (as I have found!) Do give Medihoney a go – the results were great for us!
Eczema can be so debilitating. It’s great if you can find natural alternatives that work instead of using steroids. I hope it continues to be successful 🙂 #KCACOLS
Thank you! We are still using it but not every day now. M seems to scratch the area in his sleep at night so its hard for it go completely at the moment – the weather is not helping either!
That is amazing! We have been going through a lot of different creams sadly. That improvement is so, so good. Winter is the worst time for it to flare up too 🙁
You’re right Zara winter is the worst for eczema! We are still using the cream as M is scratching at night. We are keeping it at bay – just!
This cream looks really good Maria!! Bella suffers really badly with eczema too. It is now even bleeding. We are going in circles with her as it gets to the point that it seems that she is getting better and then again she scratches it and we have to start all over again! ;-( She also has apparently asthma so I think she might have some kind of allergy to something. I will have a look of this cream. Great review lovely!! Thanks so much for sharing this at #KCACOLS. You are part of this little linky now!! 😉 xxx
I would definitely recommend giving this cream a go Franca – it worked really well for M! x
I might try this on myself. I am a terrible eczema sufferer. Mine is currently in sores due to the irritation. Thanks for the heads up! #KCAKOLS
I’d be interested to hear how you get on with it and whether its worked for you. x
