Where to Go Karting in Surrey (Indoor and Outdoor Tracks for Families)

Looking for go karting in Surrey? Here are the best indoor and outdoor tracks for kids, teens and families.

If your kids have suddenly decided they want to try go karting (mine went through a phase of talking about it non-stop), you’re definitely not alone.

Go karting in Surrey is one of those activities that seems to tick a lot of boxes. It feels a bit grown up, slightly competitive, and just different enough from the usual days out to make it exciting.

And it’s one of those things that sounds a bit intense… until you actually look into it.

Whether you’re after indoor go karting for a rainy weekend or outdoor go karting for something a bit more high-energy, there are quite a few options in and around Surrey.

We’ve actually done this a couple of times now for birthdays ourselves. Both boys had parties at Surbiton Raceway when they turned 9, which was one of those rare wins where everyone came away happy (and slightly competitive).

And more recently we did indoor karting at TeamSport Mitcham for my youngest’s 13th birthday. He’s currently completely obsessed with Formula 1 (which I’m now hearing about daily) and anything involving driving, so this felt like the obvious choice. It definitely lived up to expectations…and then some.

What is go karting?

If you’ve never done it before, it can sound a bit more intense than it actually is.

Go karting is basically a scaled-down version of motorsport (but much more manageable than it sounds). You’re driving a small kart around a track, competing for the fastest lap or most laps completed.

They’re low to the ground, easy to control, and designed for beginners as well as more confident drivers.

Think of it as somewhere between a fairground ride and Formula 1.

Is go karting suitable for kids?

This is usually the first question people ask.

The short answer is yes – but it depends on age and height.

Most tracks offer:

  • Junior karts (usually from age 6–8+)
  • Adult karts (typically 12+)
  • Some even have “bambino” sessions for younger kids

You don’t need a driving licence, and everything is done on a controlled track with safety briefings beforehand.

That said, there are a few things to be aware of.

If your child has certain medical conditions (like heart conditions or epilepsy), it’s always worth checking with the venue first.

Age and height restrictions (what to expect)

This is where it varies a bit between locations.

As a rough guide:

  • Junior karting: around age 8+ and 127cm+
  • Adult karting: around age 12+ and 150cm+
  • Some venues offer younger sessions from age 4–6

It’s one of those things where it’s worth double-checking before you book – saves a lot of disappointment on the day.

Do you need to book in advance?

In most cases, yes.

Especially for weekend slots or school holidays.

Some places do offer walk-ins, but from experience with anything remotely popular with teens… it’s rarely worth risking it.

What to expect on the day

If you haven’t been before, it’s all pretty straightforward:

  • arrive about 30–40 minutes early
  • safety briefing (this is taken quite seriously)
  • get suited up (helmet, sometimes gloves and balaclava)
  • head out onto the track

Speeds are quicker than you might expect:

  • Adult karts: around 40–50 mph
  • Junior karts: around 25–30 mph

It’s fast enough to feel exciting, but still controlled.

Outdoor go karting in Surrey

Surbiton Raceway (Worcester Park)

Three different tracks, which makes this one a good option if you’ve got kids of different ages.

  • Bambino track (younger children)
  • Cadet track
  • Grand Prix track

It’s quite a flexible setup, so it works well for families rather than just older teens. We’ve done two birthday parties here and it worked really well at that age. It’s a nice introduction to karting without it feeling too full-on.

Daytona Sandown Park, Esher

One of the best-known outdoor go karting tracks in Surrey.

  • age 6+
  • proper race circuit feel
  • good for older kids and teens

This is the one that feels closest to “real” motorsport.

If you’ve got a Formula 1 fan in the house, they’ll love it. This is probably one to book ahead, especially at weekends – it gets busy.

Camberley Kart Track (Blackbushe)

A more traditional outdoor karting setup.

Good option if you’re closer to the Surrey/Hampshire border.

Indoor go karting in Surrey

Perfect if the weather isn’t playing ball (which, let’s be honest, happens a lot).

TeamSport Karting (Mitcham, Crawley, Farnborough)

Probably the most accessible option with multiple locations.

  • good for beginners
  • consistent setup across venues
  • ideal for birthday groups

Mitcham is the closest for South West London/Surrey.

This is where we went for my youngest’s 13th birthday, and it was a big hit, especially if you’ve got teens who are into Formula 1 or anything remotely competitive.

Karting Nation (Croydon)

Another solid indoor option.

  • age 10+
  • slightly smaller setup but good for quick sessions
  • also has a location in East Grinstead

A slightly different option: electric karting

Gravity Wandsworth

Electric karting that feels a bit more like an arcade-style experience.

  • shorter sessions
  • more affordable
  • good if you want something less intense

Buckmore Park Kart Circuit (Kent)

  • near Chatham (about 1 hour from parts of Surrey)
  • one of the UK’s most well-known circuits
  • Lewis Hamilton raced here as a kid

Capital Karts (Canary Wharf)

If you don’t mind heading into London, this is a really slick indoor track.

  • electric karts (quieter but still fast)
  • modern setup
  • good for teens

Is indoor or outdoor go karting better?

This comes up quite a lot.

Honestly, it depends on your kids.

Outdoor karting:

  • feels more “real”
  • bigger tracks
  • better for older kids and teens

Indoor karting:

  • easier for beginners
  • weather-proof
  • often more structured sessions

In our house, outdoor wins once they’re a bit older… but indoor is a really good starting point.

A few things worth knowing before you go

A couple of small things that make it easier:

  • you’ll usually need to buy a balaclava (they’re only a few pounds)
  • wear trainers — no sandals or crocs
  • arrive early (they won’t wait if you’re late)
  • listen carefully to the safety briefing (they do enforce it)

And if your child is even slightly competitive… you’ve been warned.

Prepare for this to become a new hobby.

If you’re planning a few different activities, these might help:

Go karting is one of those activities that works surprisingly well across different ages. It’s exciting enough for teens but still manageable for younger kids.

And it’s one of the few things where parents often end up joining in too… which I didn’t expect, but actually makes it quite a fun family day out.
