Get your family golfing with these helpful tips
Golf, a game of skill, patience, and outdoor enjoyment, offers a unique platform for families to spend quality time together. Whether you’re an experienced player or picking up the clubs for the first time, golf can foster a sense of togetherness, healthy competition, and fun.
This article will offer helpful tips for getting your entire family involved in golf, ensuring every trip to the course is a memorable experience. Let’s tee off for a family adventure like no other!

Start with the basics
Before diving into the world of golf, it’s crucial to grasp some basic concepts. Golf can be complex, with many rules and strategies, but starting with the bare essentials like understanding the objective of the game, the various types of clubs, and some basic etiquette can be a great starting point. You don’t have to worry about mastering everything immediately; in fact, learning as you go is part of the fun.
In addition to understanding the game, establishing solid fundamental skills is key. Begin with practicing your grip, stance, and swing. Small improvements in these areas can lead to considerable progress in the game. Use household items to practice, or visit a local practice range where you can rent equipment and receive tips from professionals.
Lastly, remember to keep things light in the beginning. The focus should be on enjoying the game rather than becoming experts overnight. Patience, as in the game itself, is critical in learning golf. Make sure the emphasis remains on fun, and skills will naturally develop over time.
Choosing the right equipment
Golf can seem overwhelming with the variety of clubs, balls, gloves, bags, and other gear. Start with a basic set of clubs, which usually includes a driver, a few irons, a wedge, and a putter. As you progress, you can add more specialised clubs to your collection.
When it comes to golf balls, beginners should opt for affordable, durable options. As your skill improves, you can start to experiment with different types of balls to see which ones enhance your game. Similarly, a sturdy, comfortable pair of golf shoes and gloves can improve grip and prevent blisters.
Invest in a lightweight, durable golf bag with dividers to organise your clubs. As your love for the game grows, so will your collection of golf gear, making a good golf bag a wise investment. Don’t forget to pack sunscreen, hats, water bottles, and snacks for those lengthy rounds on the course.
Securing a golf cart can also make the game more enjoyable for family members who may not be physically able to walk the course. Many golf courses offer rentals, so don’t hesitate to inquire beforehand. Depending on your location, you can look up Durham golf carts for sale, for example, and go from there. Keep in mind that walking the course can be an excellent form of exercise, so consider alternating between walking and riding in a cart as a family.
Golf lessons for the family
Golf lessons can be a great way for the entire family to learn the game together. Look for local golf clubs or community centres that offer group lessons. This not only provides a learning experience but also offers opportunities for the family to bond.
During lessons, ensure each family member is getting individual attention. The instructor needs to consider the unique capabilities and challenges of each student. If group lessons aren’t working for your family, consider private lessons.
Don’t forget to celebrate each other’s progress. This will encourage consistent practice and foster a love for the game. Remember, the goal isn’t perfection but enjoyment.
Make Golf a fun family outing
Sports don’t always have to be competitive. Making golf outings fun, relaxed, and family-focused can foster an enjoyable atmosphere. Consider playing games within the game, like ‘closest to the pin’ or ‘longest drive’ to add excitement.
You can also opt for pitch and putt courses to start. These are much smaller than conventional golf courses, making them less intimidating for beginners while still being challenging for experienced players. It’s a great way to spend an afternoon together.
Plan for some post-golf fun. This could be a picnic on the green, a trip to a nearby ice cream shop, or simply a fun car ride home. This makes the day about more than just golf and gives everyone something to look forward to.
Practice at home
Practicing at home can be just as beneficial as practising on the course. Create a mini putting green in your backyard or even inside your house. This can provide a fun and relaxed way to hone your skills. Use household items to create obstacles and make the practice sessions more challenging and fun. Be creative and encourage everyone in the family to participate in setting up the course.
Remember, the goal of practising at home is not just to improve skills but also to keep the excitement for golf alive. Make it a regular family activity and watch your family’s passion for golf flourish.
Participate in family-friendly Golf events
Lastly, participating in family-friendly golf events can offer a new level of excitement. Many golf clubs and community centres organise events where families can compete against other families. This can be a fun and exciting way to put your skills to the test.
Preparing for these events can be a bonding activity in itself. Practice together, discuss strategies, and encourage and motivate each other. Remember, the focus of these events should be on having fun and not just winning. Participating in such events can instil a love for the game and create lasting memories.

Golf is more than just a game; it’s an experience that brings families together, creating lasting memories and bonds. Starting with the basics and moving at a comfortable pace, choosing the right equipment, engaging in lessons, making golf outings fun, practising at home, and participating in family-friendly events are all ways to instil a love for the game in your family.
Remember, the objective isn’t to become professional golfers overnight but to enjoy the journey, learn new skills, and spend quality time together. So grab your clubs, hit the greens, and embark on a family adventure filled with fun, laughter, and a little bit of friendly competition.
