Family, food, and fun: encouraging culinary curiosity in kids

If you were to ask your kids what they love, what would they say? I know both E and M would say cricket, gaming and food. They love to play cricket and games, and they want good food, too. I think we’ve been fortunate with both boys, as they are really good when it comes to food.

We’ve been lucky enough over the years to be able to eat out at some fantastic restaurants and establishments that have really put our culinary preferences to the test. From the Manchurian Cauliflower at Tsaretta Spice to Seared Wild Atlantic Scallops with Lobster and Crab bonbons at The Harts Boatyard in Kingston, these unique experiences have broadened our culinary horizons. If we were to narrow down our favourite cuisines, I would go for Thai; Mr. H’s choice would be Indian, E’s preference is Chinese, and M always opts for Mexican.

Now that they’re getting older, they eat from the main menu, but even as young kids, they sampled food from the special kids’ menus and smaller meals from the adults’ menu.

Our love for food extends beyond dining out. At home, we relish the opportunity to cook and eat a wide variety of dishes. This shared passion for diverse cuisines not only allows us to explore new flavours but also brings us closer as a family. From the laughter-filled cooking sessions to the joy of tasting our creations, these moments of togetherness are truly special. We cherish each bite and the memories we create around the dining table.

Cooking At Home

Despite having a really small kitchen, I’ve have always encouraged the boys to join me in cooking. We’ve reviewed many kitchen gadgets in the past, and they have picked up some skills I hope they can develop and put to good use as they get older. I am more than happy to teach them everything I know; I have recently been commissioned for my first birthday cake, and it was a huge success! This is something I have been interested in for many years, and I often make family birthday cakes, especially for the boys; check out some of my creations below!

This encouragement has developed into quite a passion for M in particular. He has declared he would like to be a chef when he grows up, so we are happy to support him in this passion and give him the tools he needs to see if this is what he wants to do when he grows up as a career or just as a hobby.

In addition to helping me out in the kitchen, M likes to play lots of food-related games. He has some he plays in Roblox, and he’s just discovered these new food games, which he’s been playing a lot recently, too. He particularly enjoys Flip ‘Em All where you have to keep the ingredients in the wok and stop them from falling. I actually found this one quite addictive to play too. Some of the ingredients are impossible to catch as you have to move quickly from one side of the screen to the other!

He also likes playing The Boiled Eggs game, where you boil different types of eggs, from soft to hard boiled in multiple different pans. M enjoys trying to juggle the boiling of the different pans to earn points. Up to six pans can be on-the-go at the same time

I think in the future; I might get M to help out with creating new meal plans and recipes to see how creative he gets and see him really enjoy the process as a whole, not just the eating part!

Are your kids good eaters? How do you encourage kids to try new foods and be more adventurous with what they eat? Do you think playing food-related games help?
