A Chinese Wedding Banquet

Over the weekend we attended a Chinese Wedding Banquet. The boys have never been to one before so they didn’t know what to expect. Traditionally Chinese weddings are pretty much centred around food – and lots of it! There are a whopping 12 courses, so you don’t go hungry!

Each dish has a meaning behind it; we had suckling pork, lobster, crab claws, fish and so much more. E, in particular, was in his element with all the food.

On the downside, there is a lot of waiting around – especially if you have young children. The banquet can easily last 2-3 hours. Luckily we were prepared and had packed toys, colouring sets and iPads which kept them busy.

Chatting briefly to the bride brought back memories of our own wedding day (7 years this April!)  and all the organising and planning that goes with planning a wedding.

I LOVED every moment of organising our wedding. Designing wedding invitations, sourcing suppliers, wedding favours etc. I thrived on it all.

There are so many different entertainment packages available now than when we got married back in 2009. Back then it was all the rage to have disposable cameras on each table or a Polaroid camera for guests to take photos and add into a guest book. The wedding we were at over the weekend had a photo booth which was just so much fun. With props of all sorts, the boys had a great time choosing what they wanted to take into the booth!

And of course, no wedding is complete without a DJ and a dancefloor! We were on the second floor of the restaurant which meant the boys could look down onto the main area where the bride and groom were sitting. They had a little boogie between courses, but we had to leave before the party got started as they had school the next day.

They are already looking forward to the next one though.

Have you ever been to a Chinese wedding/banquet before? How did you find it?

  4. Oh my, a two to three hour Chinese banquet sounds like heaven to me. But yes, I can imagine it might be slightly less entertaining for kids! We’re off to a wedding this weekend – they have a lot to live up to now! 😉 Thanks so much for linking up with #KCACOLS. I hope you can popm back next week x

Looks amazing! I love the lanterns in the picture. So pretty. There are so many fun things around for weddings now aren’t there? Maybe we need to persuade our menfolk to renew vows so we can throw another couple of parties?! 🙂 Kathy x #KCACOLS

  6. I attend Chinese wedding banquets of relatives, friends, co-workers, neighbours etc several times a year though I’m quite sure the banquets over here on our side of the pond are a little different from the ones in the UK. The waiting time between courses can be a pain – not fun when you have young kids!
