Washington DC is America’s capital city, rich in history, culture, and character. If you are visiting Washington DC, then there are lots of things for you to do. Taking a tour

Before moving on to specific things that you should do in the city, let’s first cover getting there. Most people agree that if you are visiting Washington by day, taking a tour is the best way to see everything. If you live in a city that’s not too far from Washington like New York, Baltimore, or Philadelphia, you will be able to get a bus there. There are lots of different services available, of course. You can find tours that take place over several days or tours that are complete in a few hours. It depends entirely upon your availability.

The White House

As promised, could you ever visit DC without visiting The White House? The White House is where the president lives, and where decisions that influence the world’s future are made. Tours can be taken of the White House, its gardens, and the buildings surrounding it. Tours may be suspended, however, because of the COVID-19 pandemic. It is important that you do your research beforehand so that you can ensure entry is gained. It would be a great shame to arrive in the nation’s capital, only to find that you cannot gain access to the building.

Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History

The Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History is one of America’s largest, and most interesting museums. Here, you will find artefacts like the remains of dinosaurs, human remains, and interesting exhibits. The Smithsonian is open year-round and has reopened to tourists again after being closed for a while because of the pandemic. Unlike other American museums, entry is completely free. There is however a very nice gift shop and café on the site for you to visit, and spend money in. If you are a fan of biology, history, and nature, this is the place for you.

National Museum of African American History and Culture

Another museum that’s worth visiting when you’re in DC is the National Museum of African American History and Culture, also run by the Smithsonian. As with other museums run and funded by the Smithsonian, it is completely free to enter. The museum features the history of slavery, and details how far African Americans have come since they were introduced to the continent. In a time when the accomplishments of African Americans are being celebrated, it’s never been more appropriate to visit the museum.

U.S. Capitol

The U.S. Capitol is another landmark, like the White House, that can’t be missed. Unfortunately, as you likely already know, a failed coup d’état was launched there last year, so security has been tightened. Because of this, entry may not be possible. It is still possible however for you to view the building from the outside. Surrounding the U.S. Capitol, there are lots of other interesting landmarks and sights, including the Washington Monument, which is only a seven-minute drive away. The Library of Congress is also a stone’s throw from the U.S. Capitol.

Lincoln Memorial

Abraham Lincoln is one of America’s most celebrated presidents. He brought an end to slavery and helped to shape America into the nation that it is today. For this reason, a giant statue was erected in his honour. This is the Lincoln Memorial. Over six million people visit this memorial each year. It is completely free to see, with no ticket required for entry. Be sure to bring a camera with you if you are going to see the Lincoln Memorial so that you can take lots of photographs.

Go-go performances

Go-go is Washington DC’s official music, recognized in 2020. Go-go originated in DC’s thriving African American community. It is a unique musical style, and very enjoyable. If you are in the city and want to visit a bar, then why not visit one that’s showcasing local go-go artists? There are regular retro go-go nights held at bars and clubs throughout Washington DC.

There are lots of things for you to do in DC. Far more than one could ever fit in an article, though this article features some of the city’s best attractions and activities. Make sure to plan your trip beforehand, so that you can make the most out of it. This is especially true if you are an international tourist and might not have the opportunity to visit again in the future.
