Playbrush: Putting the fun into brushing kids teeth

I’m sure ours is not the only house where brushing teeth is a real chore. I have to nag to get the boys into the bathroom and monitor them to check they are brushing their teeth correctly.

E has an electronic toothbrush with a timer on so he knows how long he should be brushing his teeth for. M likes to try and brush his own teeth but I always give them a once over after he’s done just to be on the safe side. The whole process can take a good 10 minutes or so.

When I heard about the Playbrush I thought it sounded like a great idea to make teeth brushing fun. Playbrush is a clever little device that you fit onto the bottom of your normal toothbrush and turns it into a controller. The device connects to an app that you download onto your phone (iOs, Android and Kindle Fire) which you then use to play games whilst brushing your teeth. You can have up to 6 profiles per device which is really handy if you have more than one child. It means the boys can share one rather than having to have one each.

The aim of the game(s) is to shoot crobies, fly planes or save the tooth fairy and the motion sensors in the Playbrush record how well your teeth are brushed. At the end of the game, the app shows you statistics and what you can do to improve the next time you brush.

The boys currently love using the Playbrush and each evening when I tell them it’s time to get ready for bed they get very excited and the first thing they say is “Can we use the Playbrush?” It’s been a great tool to get them to brush all the different areas of their mouth – something which I struggled with before. They love the fact they get to play a game and before you know it, 2 minutes is up and they unwillingly hand their toothbrush back to me.

If you have children that are reluctant to brush their teeth – try the Playbrush. It’s currently priced at a very reasonable £16.99 and can be bought through the Playbrush shop.

  1. Wow, this is a cunning idea. I usually resort to pinning Cygnet to the floor. He hates it and so do I. Thanks. Pen x #KCACOLS

  2. This looks amazing! We have a brushing app but Mia would absolutely love this! Shes ok at brushing her teeth but does find it a chore sometimes so I’m always looking for the next thing to have up my sleeve! 🙂
