Must-haves for our kitchen extension

I’m inching ever closer to getting the kitchen I’ve wanted ever since we moved into our home (over 10 years ago) After going backwards and forwards with our plans (for a while, we also considered moving house altogether!) we’ve now come to the decision to go ahead and have our rear kitchen extension build first and leave the loft conversion to a later date.

It’s exciting stuff but we need to find the right builder who will undertake the work as well as an architect to draw up our plans before we get too ahead of ourselves.

I’ve already started looking at colour schemes for our kitchen and what must-haves I want. The main thing is storage – I want to keep my worktops clear from clutter because this is one of my pet-hates in our current kitchen at the moment. I love the look of the pull-out larder units where you can instantly see what you have stacked on the shelves. No more sitting on the floor rummaging through a huge cupboard trying to find a tin of beans!

The next important thing I would need is a dishwasher. Not having to wash up and have dishes stacked next to the sink which looks messy would be amazing. Living in a house full of boys you can imagine how many dishes get used in a day from their constant snacking! When the time comes, I would like to use a company like Kitchen warehouse. They offer high-quality kitchens but at trade price to the public without the need for a middle man.

This brings me onto my next must-have. We need durable floors that can withstand the constant dropping of toys and the scuff and scrapes from train and LEGO building. I think engineered wood flooring would be perfect for the kitchen as it would also be able to withstand the fluctuations of temperature and moisture levels changes with ease.

Next on my list, a kitchen island. This would double up as a breakfast area in the morning for the boys and would provide a great space for the boys to be able to help me with baking and cooking.

What would be your must-haves for a new kitchen?
