Keeping a clean house with kids

If you have children and you’ve been wondering how you can keep the house clean, you’re in the right place. Sometimes it feels like trying to climb a mountain or, as they say, trying to mop the floor while the house is filling with flood water. It can be very difficult for some to do anything with children around because as much as you clean your floors or you clean your home, your children do still happen to live there, which means that it’s going to get messy again fairly quickly.

You also have to consider balancing the children with the responsibility of your chores, and that in itself is a difficult thing to do. Keeping a house clean with kids around can be easy, but it takes some organisation. Instead of trying to climb Mount Everest, you could start by making your home as low maintenance as possible.

For example, swapping out carpets in high-traffic areas for Victorian floor tiles can instantly make your home low maintenance because it’s so much easier to get stains and splashes out of a tiled floor than it is to get out of the carpet. Of course, you can’t always just go for the low-maintenance options, especially if you’ve finally got your home the way you want it to look. So, take a look at our tips below on how you can keep your home looking great with kids running around.

  1. Start with a solid decluttering session. The more stuff you have in your house, the harder it will be for your kids to learn where things belong, and the harder it will be for you to stay on top of the actual cleaning. Clutter and cleanliness are two different things. You can always have clutter dotted around, but that doesn’t mean underneath all of that cutter is clean enough for you to feel like the house is less germy. If you get the kids involved in keeping their own things out of the way, it’s going to be easier to keep the place clean and tidy.
  2. Everything has a place, but everybody has to know it. It’s going to be much harder for you to try and stay on top of things by yourself, so if you live with a partner, make sure you’re not the only person cleaning. The key thing is that anybody who lives in your home needs to be keeping on top of cleaning it, so assign chores if you must. Everything has a place to go, which means that everybody needs to be aware of where all of these things are going.
  3. Rotate toys. Children come with a lot of accessories, especially because you’re the one buying them. After you’ve decluttered out any toys, make sure that you rotate the ones that are out in the open. Most of the time, kids can keep their toys in their bedrooms, and it’s much easier to keep your living room and your dining room spaces clear. However, those toys can soon become scattered around the house when they are bored or the kids are finished playing with them. You can box up some toys and give it 2-3 months before you bring them back out again and swap them out for some of the toys that they’ve got out. This means that they will always feel like they have new toys to play with.
  4. Clean after bedtime. Aside from decluttering, you need to actually get a chance to Hoover or mop the floors, and it’s easier to do that once the kids have gone to bed.If you wait until bedtime has completed and then give yourself 30 minutes every evening to get some cleaning done, you’ll be able to not only stay on top of the daily cleaning, but be able to get at least one deep cleaning job done per day. You may already be cleaning up after meals and such to stay on top of wipes, tables and clean floors, but with the right attitude you can give yourself a 30 minute timer before you sit down to relax for the evening. It’s so much easier to relax when you know your house is going to smell and look fantastic.
  5. Take another look at how high maintenance your house is. If you have fabric sofas over leather, you might find yourself washing the upholstery a lot more than you would wiping down leather. If you have carpets, you might find yourself spending a lot of money to replace them.

At the start of this article, we talked about looking at your home and making it more low maintenance to fit with children, and this is one of the ways that you can keep your home beautifully tidy.
