Global Sporting Events that never get old
There are undoubtedly tons of sporting events worldwide where participants showcase their skills and prowess—giving fans reasons to gather every time. Mentioning them all won’t be possible because of time. So to make this list short and simple, here are the top 4 global sporting events that never get old.
The Grand National, England
England is home to many prestigious horse racing events, but the Grand National stands out. The prestigious event comprises three days of multi-horse racing held in Liverpool’s Aintree Racecourse. Over 40 horses race against each other on a 7km course. For this reason, every April, over 150,000 horse racing and sport betting fans gather at Liverpool. The Grand National never gets old.
It’s not just a horse racing day, but the three-day event of fashion, the presence of celebrities, and of course a chance to win overall prize money of £1M brings a lot to the table. The Grand National is one of the most expensive races globally, where punters gather to try their luck as they place their bets on their favourite horses and riders with free racing selections and all manner of bets to choose from.
The FIFA World Cup
While football(soccer) dates back hundreds of years ago, the FIFA World Cup came into the scene for the first time in 1930, where Uruguay hosted the rest of the world between July 13th and July 30th. The FIFA World Cup has since become the most popular sporting event globally as 32 nations come together from all continents, and hosting rights go to different countries of the world every four years.
World Cup events never get old, as it isn’t only about football. The sporting event ushers in economic development for the host nation by making it the centre of the world for the duration of the event.
The Olympic Games
For two weeks, athletes from around the world compete for the opportunity to take home the gold, silver, or bronze medal. Unlike the FIFA World Cup, the Olympics is an event comprising many sports. The most popular is the summer games, which began in the 1800s.
There’s also the Winter Olympics, which features sports that take place on ice or snow. One memorable game is the 1980 men’s hockey event, where the underdogs, the United States, made one of the greatest comebacks against the favourite side, the Soviet Union.
The game went down in history as one of the most incredible sporting events with the tag “miracle on ice.” Other Olympic events include the Paralympic Games(for the physically challenged), the youth games( for athletes between 14-18 years old).
Wimbledon, England
Wimbledon is the oldest tennis championship on the planet and one of the prestigious quadruple tennis tournaments known as the grand slam. Wimbledon is unique as the only major tennis tournament players compete on natural turf. Introduced initially in France in the 12th century, the sport, however, became more popular in Britain in the 1800s.
After Walter Wingfield, a Welsh army officer patented his game in London, Wimbledon was born three years after. Some of Wimbledon’s big names are the Williams sisters, Serena and Venus, Rojer Federer, etc.
