Do you know your finances? Take the quiz to find out!
People’s finances aren’t usually something that is talked about a lot. It’s not a subject that will come up in everyday conversation and it can also be quite a personal question to ask can’t it?
I used to be terrible at managing my finances, I would never know how much in my account and would always forget to account for outgoings such as mobile phone bills and rent. Since meeting Mr H, who has always been really good with his money, I’ve managed to be much better. We have a joint account which we both pay into monthly that takes cares of our mortgage and utility bill payments a well as paying for things like the boys swimming lessons, our childminder and E’s dinner money for school. This means that whatever is left in my account is used for our weekly shop and day-to-day expenses.
We do have a couple of outstanding credit cards that we are paying off at the moment but we’re hoping to be able to clear these in the New Year ready for remortgaging to start our house renovations.
Sunny Loans who provide short-term instalment loans from £100 to £2,500 have a “Do you know your finances” quiz where you can find out just how savvy you are with money.

I was asked a number of questions ranging from APR, Bank of England percentage rates and credit score. Don’t worry – the quiz is multiple choice so it does give you a bit of a clue as to what the answers are.
It turns out I didn’t do too badly in the test but like most things, I know I can definitely do better at managing my finances and this will be something I will be looking into in the New Year.
Mr H and I have already discussed the fact that we need to find a better mortgage deal as our current one is costing us probably in excess of £100 a month – money we could be saving.
Another thing I keep meaning to do is re-look at getting new quotes for our house insurance and to switch to a different energy supplier to get a better deal. All of the above would be steps in helping us save some pennies.
Other than that, I think we need to come up with a weekly budget that we need to stick to. We use Hello Fresh during the week which means rather than doing a big food shop we are buying grocery bits as and when we need which can quickly add up as inevitably, we end up picking up items we don’t really need. We could also do with cutting down the number of times we eat out, currently its at least once a week on the weekends which is a little excessive!
